Connect your AI agent
Step by step for the apps people use most, then how to check it works and what to do when it does not. New to MCP? Start with what it is and what your agent can do.
Before you start

Searching, reading and reviewing
Need nothing but the server address. No account, no token.
Adding places
Needs an access token, so the listing is tied to your account. Make one on Connect your agent and put it wherever YOUR_TOKEN appears below.
Chat apps
Claude
Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, as a custom connector. Free plans can add one. Most accounts cannot send a token from here yet, so this covers searching, reading and reviewing.
- Open Customize, then Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector, name it Best Food on Malta and paste the server address.
- Leave sign-in off and click Add.
- In a chat, open the + menu, then Connectors, and switch Best Food on Malta on.

ChatGPT
On the ChatGPT website with a paid plan, through developer mode. On a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace an owner may need to allow it first. ChatGPT cannot send our token, so this covers searching, reading and reviewing.
- In Settings, open Apps (called Connectors on some accounts), then Advanced settings, and turn on Developer mode.
- Create a new app. Name it Best Food on Malta and paste the server address.
- Set authentication to none, accept the warning about custom apps, and create it.
- In a chat, choose Developer mode from the + menu and pick Best Food on Malta.

- Open the sidebar, then Intelligence, then Connectors, and choose Add Connector.
- On the Custom MCP Connector tab, name it Best Food on Malta and paste the server address.
- For searching and reviewing, choose no authentication. To add places too, choose API token, header name Authorization, type Bearer, and paste your token.
- Click Connect, then in a chat switch the connector on from the tools menu.

Google lets you add custom apps in the Gemini web app, for now only with a personal Google account in the US, aged 18 or over, with Keep Activity on. It covers searching, reading and reviewing.
- On gemini.google.com, open Settings, then Connected apps.
- Add a custom app and paste the server address.
- Confirm, and the app is then available in the Gemini web and mobile apps.
- Ask Gemini about food in Malta and mention Best Food on Malta.

- Run claude mcp list and look for best-food-on-malta with a tick next to it.
- Start Claude Code and ask it something about food in Malta. Typing /mcp inside a session shows the server and its tools.
- To change the token later, run claude mcp remove best-food-on-malta and add it again.
claude mcp add --transport http best-food-on-malta https://www.bestfoodonmalta.com/mcp
Adding places too
claude mcp add --transport http best-food-on-malta https://www.bestfoodonmalta.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
Then check it connected
claude mcp list

- Run one of the commands on the right, or add the entry to ~/.gemini/settings.json by hand.
- Run gemini mcp list and check best-food-on-malta is connected.
- Start Gemini CLI and ask it about food in Malta. Typing /mcp shows the server and its tools.

Adding places too
gemini mcp add --transport http --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" best-food-on-malta https://www.bestfoodonmalta.com/mcp
~/.gemini/settings.json
{
"mcpServers": {
"best-food-on-malta": {
"httpUrl": "https://www.bestfoodonmalta.com/mcp",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
}
}
}
}
Cursor
One click, or an entry in Cursor's JSON file. Cursor shows the settings and asks before adding anything.
- Click Add to Cursor, or open ~/.cursor/mcp.json and add the entry on the right.
- To add places too, make a token and use the button on Connect your agent, or add the headers block by hand.
- Open Cursor's MCP settings and check the server is listed and enabled.
- Ask the agent about food in Malta in a new chat.
Opens the app, which shows what it is adding and asks first.
~/.cursor/mcp.json{
"mcpServers": {
"best-food-on-malta": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://www.bestfoodonmalta.com/mcp",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
}
}
}
}
VS Code
For GitHub Copilot's agent mode. One click, or a .vscode/mcp.json file, where the top-level key is servers rather than mcpServers.
- Click Add to VS Code, or create .vscode/mcp.json in your project with the entry on the right.
- To add places too, make a token and use the button on Connect your agent, or add the headers block by hand.
- Start the server from the prompt VS Code shows above it in the file.
- Switch the Copilot chat to Agent mode and ask about food in Malta.
Opens the app, which shows what it is adding and asks first.
.vscode/mcp.json{
"servers": {
"best-food-on-malta": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://www.bestfoodonmalta.com/mcp",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
}
}
}
}
Anything else
Windsurf, Zed, LM Studio, Goose, your own code -- anything that speaks MCP over HTTP, sometimes listed as streamable HTTP or a remote server, will work.
- Find where the app adds MCP servers, connectors or remote servers.
- Choose HTTP as the transport and paste the server address.
- To add places, set an Authorization header to Bearer followed by your token.
- Save and look for five tools, starting with search_listings.
{
"mcpServers": {
"best-food-on-malta": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://www.bestfoodonmalta.com/mcp",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
}
}
}
}
Check it works
Ask your agent one of these. A working connection uses the tool shown and links you to pages on this site.
-
search_listings
“Find me a Maltese rabbit recipe on Best Food on Malta.”
-
list_reviews
“What have people said about it?”
-
get_listing
“What is the address and phone number of the first restaurant you found in Valletta?”
-
submit_listing
“Add a restaurant called … in Sliema. (Needs a token.)”
When it does not work
- Failed to connect, or the header has an invalid value
- The token was probably copied with a space or a line break. Copy it again and check the line reads Authorization, a colon, Bearer, one space and the token.
- invalid_token, or a 401 error
- The token was revoked or mistyped. Make a new one on Connect your agent and replace the old one.
- “Adding a listing needs an account”
- The connection has no token. Searching and reviewing still work; add a token to add places.
- Claude, ChatGPT or the Gemini app will not add a place
- Their connector settings cannot send our token yet. Use Le Chat, Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Cursor or VS Code to add places.
- ChatGPT, Le Chat or Gemini cannot reach the server
- They connect from their own servers, so they need the public https address shown above. A server running on your own computer is out of their reach.
- Too many requests
- There is a limit on how quickly an agent can call in, and a tighter one on reviews and new places. Wait a few minutes and try again.
- My new place is not on the site
- Places added by an agent are saved as drafts, the same as ones added on the website, and go live once they have been checked.
