Tartarun

We went to Tartarun as a wedding treat to ourselves, and what a treat it was! We were simply blown away by the food, from start to finish, along with the hospitality of the staff.

We began with a selection of starters, with the pink prawn carpaccio and local prawns (gambli ħomor) being the stars of the show.

For mains we had a sea bream (awrat) for two, perfectly cooked al sale, served with beautifully thinly sliced roast potatoes along with a number of greens, and a beurre blanc sauce on the side (which when paired with the fish was like an epiphany to us; a pairing we overlooked before in our home cooking).

We finished with dessert, trying out the halva (ħelwa tat-tork) gelato and coconut sorbet. Picking a favourite between these two was tough, but the halva gelato came out on top.

Before leaving, the staff warmly congratulated us once again and gave us a little sweet treat - some wonderful chocolate truffles.

All in all, 10/10 experience! We will definitely come back again to Tartarun when we visit Malta!

Tartarun was recommend by our host and we loved the food and experience here. Our expectations were surpassed. The service was impeccable. The ambience was lovely and comfortable. The food was fabulous. The pink prawn capaccio and special of the day, linguine with lobster, were delicious and the sea bass baked in salt was THE BEST fish we have ever had. Fresh and prepared to perfection. There was a nice wine list with local Maltese wines and we received a fine recommendation from the sommelier. A perfect meal.

My wife and I have visited many Michelin rated restaurants. Tartarun is simply outstanding. The material, on point preparation, simplicity to perfection. The interior breathes a timeless elegance.
It’s widely known that the restauration business is increasingly hard. It’s wonderful to see a generational run family business excell at what it does. Thank you for a very pleasant Easter lunch. Kudos to the whole team. 👏

The meal I enjoyed here was better than 80% of the Michelin starred meals I’ve had. The service and the way they cared for us felt like family. Warm and passionate about their craft. Ambiance was gloriously airy, chic, and beautifully honoring of the historic fishing town the restaurant is built around. Now the food… the food was just perfect. Beurre blanc sauce on salt crust roasted pink snapper was perfectly executed and an elegant nod to classic yet haute cuisine. I will be dreaming of that fish for weeks. The Maltese roasted potatoes were elevated in form while perfectly resembling the taste of Maltese potatoes my Nennu and mother have made since I was a child. I hope the chef continues to play with more traditional Maltese dishes in modern forms. The calamari fritti was the best I’ve ever had. How can something fried taste so fresh? Gorgeous pickled onion slivers add bright contrast to the perfectly toasty fried calamari.
Constructive notes: the prawn carpaccio was a bit gummy in texture and needed more acid for my taste. The homemade focaccia was gorgeous and delicious and the only thing that could have made it better would be of the top crust was a bit more crispy to the point that it will shatter rather than being a bit dense. The interior crumb was absolutely perfect, still warm, soft and almost tacky in texture. Glorious. This restaurant was truly a treat and I can’t wait to come back.

One of the best spots in Malta, offering a relaxed and refined atmosphere with a great selection of fresh, flavorful dishes. service is attentive and knowledgeable without being intrusive, and the wine list is diverse, featuring some excellent options. We will definitely recommend it and look forward to coming back many more times.
