I was poisoned at Rampila restaurant, 3 weeks ago.

I was taken for lunch by two business colleagues both long-standing customers of Rampila.

After looking at the menu, I was informed that the Lampuki fish is a specialty of Malta. Fatefully, I ordered Lampuki.

After lunch, I returned to my hotel room nearby and within minutes of arrival began to feel unwell. My head was turning and I felt dizzy and lay on the bed gasping for breath.

I tried to get up but just couldn’t. Waves of nausea descended and my heart was beating fast, which I later discovered is a potentially life threatening condition, called tachycardia.

Eventually and with great difficulty, I managed to reach for the bedside phone and called for help. Ten minutes later, I was in an ambulance headed to the Emergency Room at the Mater Dei hospital.

The doctor in charge of my case, on hearing that I had eaten Lampuki fish, diagnosed Scombroid poisoning.

Scombroid is a not uncommon cause of food poisoning that results from the inferior handling and preparation of raw fish such as the Lampuki.

I was injected with an antihistamine and placed on a drip.

Within a few hours I was released from hospital still feeling shaken and rotten. I returned to my hotel and slept for the next 14 hours. On waking I still felt shaky.

Although I have recovered physically, I still suffer nightmares as a result of the memories of panic induced by the Scombroid poisoning.

I have reported this matter to Rampila and requested compensation.

I supplied them with a medical report but I have heard nothing positive despite writing to them several times. I have not even received an apology.

Draw your own conclusion before choosing to dine at Rampila.

Very wonderful experience! The restaurant is located near the historical site. It is a cave inside with proper and decent facilities whereas there is a spectacular view outdoors. The food is awesome. We ordered the grilled octopus, traditional Maltese soup and the crab and lobster ravioli.

The octopus was excellent — very tender and grilled perfectly. For the soup, the seafood flavours leaned more towards rich, aromatic depth rather than pure freshness, with notes of mussels and herbs like bay leaf. However, the ravioli was less successful for me. The pasta was too thick and overpowered the delicate crab and lobster filling. The sauce had a subtle seafood flavour but felt too mild overall.

We came to try the famous fish soup and also tried nduja pasta. We didn’t have any reservation but we got a nice table outside for 4 pretty quickly and with a amazing view. There’s not a lot of space inside but the interior and atmosphere is amazing.
We waited a long time to order and an even longer time to get our meal (almost 1 hour).
The fish soup is very good, the flavor is authentic and comes with a fair portion of sea food. It comes also with a complimentary bread buns with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Unfortunately the pasta was disappointing. The portion was extremely small, lacked taste and had nothing to do with nduja.
The price of fish soup was fair but the pasta was extremely overpriced.

I celebrated my birthday at this restaurant – and it could hardly have been more perfect. From beginning to end, I have only positive things to say.

The dishes were outstanding throughout: refined, creative, and perfectly balanced in flavor. Every course was a true experience. The wine was equally exceptional – we chose the Grand Cavalier, which paired beautifully and tasted incredible.

I would especially like to highlight the staff: extremely friendly, attentive, and pleasantly unobtrusive. The service was excellent in every respect and truly completed the evening.

An unforgettable birthday at a restaurant I can wholeheartedly recommend.

My favorite dinner in Valletta! Great food and overall stellar experience. I was seated in the outdoor terrace with a great view. The food is great, fresh and you can really taste the quality of the ingredients like a high quality olive oil and fresh seafood. The service is attentive and friendly. Definitely call and book a place before coming. The prices are high but it was worth it for the experience. I’ve had an amazing dinner.

Rampila was quite simply perfect. We ate on the terrace, nestled into the city walls. The location was so unique, so quaint, so everything you want Malta to be.

The food was divine and service, impeccable. It was a beautiful winter night so we wanted to enjoy dining al fresco with such incredible views, despite it being a bit cool. We'll, before I could set down my purse, another heater was being delivered table-side and blankets offered. They were so very courteous and attentive.

Now, saving the best for last, the food. Ah, the food.... We enjoyed a baked cheese appetizer, the veal sirloin and the lobster crab ravioli, followed by tiramisu and an apple tart with vanilla ice cream. Every single bite of every dish was just perfect.

We couldn't be happier and can't wait to come back.
